2006 Scholarship Recipients
Marisol Alvarado is a graduate of the LBJ High School Liberal Arts and Science Academy and will attend Rice University. She will study biomedical engineering in order to innovate medical testing devices while helping find a cure for cancer. In addition to science and engineering, Marisol excels at dance, yoga, and community service.
Ashley Criswell is ranked fourth in her class at Crockett High School and will attend Austin Community College and Angelo State University to pursue a career in neo-natal nursing. Ashley’s extracurricular activities range from community service to Future Farmers of America, where she raised a show goat. She cites her loving and supportive family as positive influences on her goals.
Ricardo Gonzalez is a Crockett High School graduate and will attend Texas A & M University to study pre-med. Ricardo wants to become a surgeon and has already demonstrated his concern for others by volunteering with senior citizens and for other community-minded causes. He has consistently excelled in academics, particularly in Latin.
Mario Marchan, the valedictorian of his Johnston High School class, will attend the University of North Texas. In addition to Mario’s numerous academic honors, he plays in the marching band, is president of his high school class, and tutors international students in science and math. Mario hopes to become a plastic surgeon to help those who are scarred by physical deformities.
Christina Ramirez is a graduate of Lanier High School's W. Neal Kocurek Health Science Institute, where she held the highest grade average. Christina’s high school curriculum included clinical rotations. This experience, plus her compassion for patients, has spurred her toward becoming a nurse anesthetist. She will attend the University of Texas at Austin.
Sherrill Rose graduated second in her class at Garza High School, despite giving birth and missing an entire semester of school. Sherrill, known as “Charlie,” also volunteered many hours for worthy causes while attending high school and raising her child. She will attend the University of Texas at Austin in the Plan II interdisciplinary honors program, where she will major in pre-med.
Diego Villa is a graduate of the W. Neal Kocurek Health Science Institute at Lanier High School and will study pre-med at Texas State University. Diego is both a scholar and an athlete; a highly ranked student, Diego was an All-District first team goalkeeper on his soccer team and a mentor in the Peer Assistance and Leadership program (helping elementary and middle school students).
